On October 9, 2024, Dr. Thang Luong delivered an inspiring open lecture titled “AI Dream for Vietnam and Beyond” to over 120 students and faculty at VinUni. His talk highlighted his personal journey in AI, from high school through his pioneering work on neural machine translation at Stanford, to co-creating Google’s Project Meena, which later evolved into LaMDA and Bard. He captivated the audience by discussing cutting-edge AI developments, including AlphaGeometry, an AI that achieved silver-medal-level performance at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
Students were deeply engaged, and many queued after the session for a chance to speak with Dr. Luong. His message emphasized the potential of Vietnamese talent in AI and his vision of empowering the next generation through initiatives like the New Turing Institute (formerly VietAI). His optimism about the future of AI in Vietnam left a lasting impression, inspiring many to explore AI’s transformative potential.
