Lessons from Japan: Reimagining Disaster Resilience through Technology, Governance, and Society

CEI was pleased to host Professor Rajib Shaw (Keio University), a global expert in disaster risk reduction and climate resilience, for an engaging seminar on disaster risk management in today’s increasingly complex global landscape on January 29, 2026.

During the session, Professor Shaw shared valuable experiences and lessons from Japan, a country that continuously faces major natural hazards such as earthquakes and tsunamis. The seminar highlighted how Japan has developed advanced and innovative approaches to disaster preparedness and response, including digital inclusivity, well-coordinated evacuation planning, and the strategic use of innovation in disaster risk management.

Beyond technology, Professor Shaw emphasized the importance of people-centered solutions, strong governance, and community involvement in building long-term resilience. These insights demonstrated how science, technology, and social systems must work together to effectively manage disaster risks.

The discussion generated strong interest among students and participants, sparking thoughtful questions and conversations about how Japan’s experiences can inspire disaster risk reduction strategies in other contexts.

Thank you to Professor Rajib Shaw and everyone who joined us for this insightful and inspiring session!
